For teachers
As a teacher you do everything an assistant does, plus course setup, rubric editing, work distribution, and sending grades to A+.
Set up a course
Section titled “Set up a course”- On the Hanami front page, choose New course.
- Select an A+ course where you are a teacher. Start with an empty configuration or copy compatible settings from another Hanami course.
- Review the name, URL slug, course languages, and syntax-highlighting languages.
- Open the course’s Settings tab to configure A+ tags, code templates, tag visibility, and the grading team.
- Save the settings before refreshing tags or the template catalog.
The course configuration guide explains each section and the order in which to configure it.
Create a rubric
Section titled “Create a rubric”Open Grading, choose Rubrics, and select an assignment under New rubric. An assignment enters the grading workflow after its rubric is saved.
For each rubric:
- Give it a title that graders can recognize in the queue.
- Add categories and set the maximum points for each category.
- Add reusable feedback phrases. A phrase can add or subtract points and can have text in every course language.
- Add an optional grade scale when the assignment uses one.
- Save the rubric, then open Submissions to check that the expected students or groups appear.
You can duplicate an existing rubric into another assignment when the categories are similar, then edit the copy.
Distribute grading work
Section titled “Distribute grading work”Open Grading and choose Submissions. Select an assignment before changing its distribution.
You can assign a student or group directly, or use Auto-assign. Automatic assignment uses the grading languages and tag claims configured for each grader. Tag claims take priority over language matching. Check the unassigned count before grading starts, especially after changing the team or importing new A+ tags.
The Overview page shows progress by assignment and grader. Use it to find unassigned work, drafts that have stalled, and assessments waiting to be sent.
Reviewing and sending
Section titled “Reviewing and sending”Assessments move through three states: draft, ready, and sent. Assistants and teachers write drafts and mark them ready; sending is teacher-only, because the A+ grade API itself rejects assistants.
Review a ready assessment in the workspace before sending it, or use Submissions to send one ready row or all ready assessments for the selected assignment. A send cannot be undone or edited in Hanami. Handle corrections in A+ according to the course’s grading policy.
Sending posts a new graded submission to A+ via the teacher submissions API, carrying the points and the composed feedback HTML. Grading in A+ is asynchronous but typically completes in seconds; A+ remains the system of record for official points.
Exercises without submissions
Section titled “Exercises without submissions”A+ teacher-graded noSubmission exercises (e.g. essays or project work graded
outside A+) have nothing to download or annotate. Hanami grades these
rubric-only, against the course’s student list instead of a submission queue.
Sending works the same way.
Written feedback and email
Section titled “Written feedback and email”Beyond per-exercise grading, staff can write feedback documents (titles, comments, code annotations) per student and email a feedback document to the student, with the sender copied and set as reply-to. Emailing a document also marks it shared, making it visible to the student in Hanami’s read-only student view.
Email is available only when the deployment has SMTP configured. If the send action is unavailable, ask the Hanami operator to check the email settings.
